چکیده

Hubble Space Telescope observations of distant clusters have suggested a steep increase in the proportion of S0 galaxies between clusters at high redshifts and similar systems the present-day. It has been proposed that this increase results from the transformation of the morphologies of accreted field galaxies from spirals to S0s. We have simulated the evolution of the morphological mix in clusters based on a simple phenomenological model where the clusters accrete a mix of galaxies from the surrounding field, the spiral galaxies are transformed to S0s (through an unspecified process) and are added to the existing cluster population. We find that in order to reproduce the apparently rapid increase in the ratio of S0 galaxies to ellipticals in the clusters, our model requires that: (1) galaxy accretion rate has to be high (typically, more than half of the presentday cluster population must have been accreted since z ∼ 0.5), and (2) most of the accreted spirals, with morphological types as late as Scdm, must have transformed to S0’s. Although the latter requirement may be difficult to meet, it is possible that such bulge-weak spirals have already been ‘pre-processed’ into the bulge-strong galaxies prior to entering the cluster core and are eventually transformed into S0’s in the cluster environment. On the basis of the evolution of the general morphological mix in clusters our model suggests that the process responsible for the morphological transformation takes a relatively long time (∼ 1–3Gyr) after the galaxy has entered the cluster environment.

Galex Observations of “passive Spirals” in the Cluster Cl 0024+17: Clues to the Formation of S0 Galaxies

We present new results from deep GALEX UV imaging of the cluster Cl 0024+17 at z ∼ 0.4. Rest-frame far UV emission is detected from a large fraction of so-called “passive spiral galaxies” –a significant population which exhibits spiral morphology with little or no spectroscopic evidence for ongoing star formation. This population is thought to represent infalling galaxies whose star formation h...

The transformation of Spirals into S0 galaxies in the cluster environment

We discuss the observational evidences of the morphological transformation of Spirals into S0 galaxies in the cluster environment exploiting two big databases of galaxy clusters: WINGS (0.04 < z < 0.07) and EDisCS (0.4 < z < 0.8). The most important results are: (1) the average number of S0 galaxies in clusters is almost a factor of ∼ 3− 4 larger today than at redshift z ∼ 1; (2) the fraction o...

Evolutionary synthesis models for the formation of S0 galaxies in clusters

Rich galaxy clusters in the local Universe show a large population of S0 galaxies (∼40% of all luminous galaxies). With increasing redshift the fraction of this S0 galaxy population is observed to strongly decrease (e.g. by a factor ∼2−3 to z = 0.5) in favor of the spiral galaxy fraction while the number of bright ellipticals does not seem to change. The infalling field galaxy population that s...

Gas Measurements for 329 Nearby Cluster and Field Spirals: Ii. Evidence for Galaxy Infall

We have conducted a study of optical and H I properties of spiral galaxies (size, luminosity, Hα flux distribution, circular velocity, H I gas mass) to explore the role of gas stripping as a driver of morphological evolution in clusters. We find a strong correlation between the spiral and S0 fractions within clusters, and the spiral fraction scales tightly with cluster X-ray gas luminosity. We ...

Galaxy Morphologies in the Cluster CL1358+62 at z=0.33

We describe the morphological composition of a sample of 518 galaxies in the field of CL1358+62 at z=0.33, drawn from a large HST mosaic covering 53 sq. arcmin. The sample is complete to I=22, corresponding to MV =-18.5 in the rest frame. The galaxy morphologies have been independently classified by the authors of this paper and by Alan Dressler. Dressler’s classifications place our work in con...
